As the husband of a wife who is addicted to painting, I need your advice.
I am currently trapped in the upstairs bathroom with no viable means of escape( I can't squeeze out the ceiling vent) and I have all the necessary tools to paint the entire room. My question is....
If I were to paint the tub, toilet, and vanity sink the same colors as the wall, will she ban me from painting forever, or will I be permantly disabled?
Time is of the essence, so please answer quickly
I want to paint my dining rm/kitchen. I plan to paint over the wood paneling in my dining rm. It'll give it a country kind of look. However the north wall of the dining rm continues into the living rm. Do I have to use the same color as the living rm? I don't really want to use that same color. The trim is painted an off-white. Could I go with the off-white color for the north wall and paint the rest of the walls with a coordinating contrast color?
I plan to use a contrast color for the kitchen as there isn't a lot of wall space. Something fun. Your thoughts please.
To Rotoli--it's great to keep your sense of humor while doing home improvements. Your wife is fortunate to have such an accommodating hubby. You're really earning the points! I don't recommend painting everything the same color...I know you spend a lot of time in camo, but not being able to distinguish the tub from the toilet could prove to be a problem later on. Chances are you won't be banned from painting, although permanent disability is a possibility...hang in there, you'll be done soon (just in time for the next project!)...........D
Susan--Please see my post about painting paneling for more information about the process before beginning. There is a link to a great article from HGTV there.
As far as the color, it is possible to paint the wall and trim that continues into the LR the same colors as the LR and use another dining room wall for the contrasting color? I think that might give more "flow" from room to room and de-emphasize the room change in order to make the spaces seem larger.
Also, think long and hard about the painted paneling. If you leave the grooves or put on a stucco finish (see my post re: paneling), there may be enough interest with the texture that introducing another color will be over the top. Perhaps colorful pictures or accessories on a neutral background would be more attractive.
On the kitchen walls I am assuming we are talking the backsplash area? Definately do something fun there. Have you thought about wallpapering it? Colored ceramic tiles are nice, too. How about the cupboards? What kind of shape are they in? Have you considered painting them?
I currently "live" in my office at school. I have a large open bookcase that occupies one whole wall. It is piled with books...and everything else! It looks messy no matter how I arrange things. Any suggestions? I also have two file cabinets that are pretty full.
Hi Kelly
Places to store things are just wonderful, but places without doors, such as bookshelves, are challenging to manage. You want them functional, but pleasant to look at as well.
Tell me more about what is on them. Are they bound books or binders or loose sheet music? Are they uniform sizes? What size is the case and how far apart, approximately, are the shelves?
As far as the file cabinet goes, you probably need to weed it out. Set a "before date" and toss everything that is that date and older without even looking at it (you haven't needed it so far, what are the chances you'd be able to retreive it if did?).
I'm going to research storage solutions in the meantime, so get back to me on what you've got there.
